Why learn American Sign Language?

More than a million people in the United States speak American Sign Language. If someone you love can’t hear well, that’s a great reason to learn ASL! You’ll be able to communicate in a meaningful way with hard of hearing or deaf individuals in the US.

What is Deaf culture?

Deaf with a capital D has a special meaning, different from the inability to hear. Deaf describes a rich visual-based culture that is more than just American Sign Language. Learning Sign Language will open this unique world. Most countries have their own Sign Language, so visual communication can be different from area to area based on the native spoken language. Plus, the deaf community creates their own signs for their names and groups can also develop their own style of signing. At ILC we give priority for hiring deaf instructors so students can experience communicating with a deaf person in class.

Fun Facts about American Sign Language

  • Signing involves more than just hand shapes and the sign language alphabet. Body positioning and facial expressions are crucial to communicating meaning in sign language! Even a raised eyebrow or switching hands can change meaning.

  • ASL is not just making gestures - it has its own grammar and syntax that follows the native spoken language. You’ll learn how to sign based on those rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are happy to hear that you would like to study a language in the United States! Unfortunately, Indy Language Center is not currently accredited with the US government to offer you an F1 visa. However, if you find yourself needing language courses before or after coming to the USA, we have an excellent curriculum focused on speaking and fluency that is open to anyone regardless of visa status or location.

The beginner level is 80 hours in length and most students sign up for 20 hours at a time. 99% of our students continue from the first 20 hours of their class to the next 20 hours of their class without interruption, and everyone has found it much easier when we take care of the re-enrollment process for them. We will send you a re-enrollment notice about a week before the last lesson in each 20 hours and you can stop your re-enrollment at any time, so don't worry! Please click accept to acknowledge you understand this policy, then try the class out for a few weeks and see if you want to continue learning with your group. If you don't, just email or call and we'll put a stop on your re-enrollment and remove you from the class when the first 20 hours ends, no problem!
