We use WhatsApp to connect our teachers and students so they can share homework, ask questions & make any necessary schedule changes (due to holidays etc).  This group is just for you, your classmates and your teacher, but our admin team is there to help you too.

If you do not already have WhatsApp, please download the app to your phone here: whatsapp.com/download.

Once your Japanese group class is confirmed and one of our talented Japanese teachers is assigned to your group, we will send an email to all students with details of the class' scheduled days and times to meet as well as the textbook and cost right away.

Why learn Japanese?

Japanese is an important business language in Asia, and Japanese culture is popular around the world in the form of anime and music. There are over 125 million native speakers of Japanese, mostly in Japan. Many people also learn Japanese because they enjoy a challenge!  Whatever your reasons, learning Japanese will allow you to gain a new perspective on the world through the lens of Japanese culture.

Is it difficult to learn Japanese?

Several things make Japanese a challenge for English speakers. The order of sentences is completely opposite, with verbs at the end of the sentence. Other aspects of grammar are also very different from English. The three different writing systems take some work to learn as well. Japanese is one of the most difficult languages for English speakers to learn, but people take on the challenge and succeed every day. You could be one of them!

Fun Facts about Japanese

  • Japanese is written with three different writing systems: Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana. Kanji uses Chinese characters, using symbols to represent ideas. Hiragana and Katakana are both syllabaries, which means each symbol represents a syllable.

  • The only foreign language taught in Japanese middle schools is English.

  • Japan has influenced the English language, giving us many borrowed words like tsunami, karaoke, tycoon, and futon.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE GROUP CLASS I SIGNED UP FOR DOESN’T GET ENOUGH STUDENTS?

We do our best to fill new language classes each semester, but sometimes a class doesn’t fill before it’s start date. We may extend the start date and begin the class a few weeks later in the semester if possible. If a group class is unable to start, students have three options.
Option 1: The class will be delayed until the next semester, and the student receives a $50 class deferral credit.
Option 2: The student opts to receive private or semi-private language instruction at their preferred schedule and pays the difference in tuition.
Option 3: The student opts to withdraw their enrollment for the class and receives a full refund of the tuition paid.

CAN YOU OFFER HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT?

Please contact your school directly to make sure they allow credit for independent projects, then contact us. We have developed curriculum especially for high school and college students, but Indy Language Center is not an accredited credit-granting institution. We can work with the language department of your student’s school to have our class curriculum approved for the student’s school. If needed, we can make adjustments to meet the school’s requirements for granting credit. Once your student's school approves a proposal to their requirements for the language program, we can ensure your student will produce a portfolio, have recorded grades, and/or take exams that will qualify him/her for the credits awarded by their school.
