Why learn Portuguese?
Portuguese is spoken by more than 225 million people in Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, East Timor, Macau, and several other nations. Portuguese is the language of Carnival, a wild celebration famous the world over. Learn Portuguese and participate in the Carnival festivities in Brazil and Portugal that take place in the week before Lent each year.
Is it difficult to learn Portuguese?
Portuguese is fairly easy for English speakers to learn. It shares a lot in common with other Romance languages. If you’ve ever studied Spanish, French, Italian, or Latin (even a little!) you will have an advantage in picking up Portuguese.

A Portuguese-speaking person or nation is referred to as "Lusophone" (Lusófono)
The majority of Portuguese speakers live in Brazil, not Portugal. (Only 5% of the Portuguese speakers in the world live in Portugal!)
In 2009, Portuguese added three new letters to their alphabet - k, y, and w!

(ACTFL Novice) (CEFR A1)
At the end of beginner level Portuguese, you will be able to use familiar everyday expressions and have the knowledge needed for basic survival in Portuguese.
(ACTFL Intermediate Low, CEFR A2)
At the end of elementary level Portuguese classes, you will be able to express yourself in predictable concrete exchanges needed for basic life situations in Portuguese.
(ACTFL Intermediate-Mid, CEFR B2)
At the end of Pre-Intermediate level, you will be able to deal with most situations you will encounter in Portuguese when working or attending school. Students finishing this level can usually be understood by native Portuguesespeakers with some patience.
(ACTFL Intermediate-High, CEFR B2)
At the end of Intermediate level Portuguese, you will be able to speak with fluency and spontaneity without difficulty. Students finishing this level can easily be understood by native Portuguese speakers, even those unaccustomed to dealing with non-native speakers.
(ACTFL Advanced Mid, CEFR C1)
If you study Portuguese at this level you will be able to express yourself skillfully, with ease and confidence. At this level, you are able to deal with any social situation, even with unexpected social complications fluidly and with ease using Portuguese.
